Cybersecurity is rising high on the European agenda, with incidents like the SolarWinds hack offering free publicity for the cause. On 16 December 2020, the Commission unveiled a new EU cybersecurity package with several policy and legislative measures, including a new EU cybersecurity strategy document, two draft Directives and a report on EU progress made in cybersecurity for 5G networks.
In this article, we provide an overview of this package and how it’s all supposed to fit together – eventually. But “eventually” may be too late for 5G networks, a high-profile testbed for cybersecurity, with no margin for error. As explained in the last section of the article, things on that front have been moving on a separate, faster, track.
